George at Portage Glacer, notice the beautiful blue ice, very cold and windy,
the orange jacket was a life saver, THANKS AGAIN!! This was the first leg of our trip: 50 miles SE of Anchorage on the Turnagain Arm, just shy of the Kenai Peninsula. While in this area, we also visited Mt. Alyeska, a ski resort in winter that serves the greater Anchorage area. The nice thing about Alyeska is that you can see the coastal rainforest at the bottom, then ride a tram up to the top (about 3000 feet) to see the Alpine plants, which were just begiining to bloom there.

Arrived In Alaska

Arrived in Sarah Palin Land at 6:30 pm (10:30 Atlanta) , temperature 54 degrees, cloudy, light rain. The flight over the Wrangell Mountain range was incredible, the glaciers look like 50 lane highways. The motel we were scheduled to stay was a drug pick up and a place for prostitutes. I wanted to stay there but Rick would not let. We changed to the Marriott Courtyard. In a few hours we will pick our RV and head to Alyeska.

Alaska Great Adventure with George & Rick

On Sunday, June 14, Rick and I had a meeting to discuss the final details of the trip. Our first stop will be the resort area of Alyeska, AK which has a tram to take us up to the sub alpine meadow and alpine tundra. We should find such beauties as Arctic lupine, Frigid Arnica, Mountain Heather, Alpine Bittercress, Alpine Azalea, Glaucous Gentain, Lapland Diapensia (looks like Shortia), Mountain Avens and many more tundra plants.
